The sweet Church Hall beside SignPost Methodist Church I think was once used also as a school, it has to be 120 years old. Its where we had after Church lunches and dinners and refreshments, and where we had Bible School. I can see a bunch of my aunts and older cousins back in the kitchen getting things situated just as if it were last week. I remember the metal trim on the chairs being really cold on my bare legs and I loved when we’d all be together and the roar of conversation and laughter. Bible school, baby showers, wedding showers and costume parties were also held there!
Walking down for Bible School on a summer day, sometimes Aunt Hallie and Ethel would be swinging in their tree swing as we walked by on our way to or from. I’m sure I had a few Bible School teachers but I specifically remember it being my Aunt Chris. She had glue in bottles with rubber angled tips and glue dots that I loved the smell of. Boxes of crayons and colored pencils in every color in the world right there laid out in front of us. Sometimes the tables would be covered with paper for our projects with paint. She had everything we needed for crafts for Bible School and Sunday School and she had the most popsicle sticks I have ever seen all in one place in my life. It was my Aunt Chris that made the most beautiful red velvet cake I have ever seen, before or since! ♥ Her kitchen had carpet and little wooden shutters you could close from the inside on her kitchen window I think.
One of our costume parties down at the Church Hall, Robin came as a backwards man, and Wendy might have too, and they came as a pair maybe, but I am not certain. I always thought my cousin Robin had the very best ideas. “Dunk your whole head under water and pin that apple down on the bottom of the bucket with your mouth and bite onto it and pull it up” In my mind I remember it being Robin who told me how to be a successful bobber for apples, although now that I’m reliving it, I don’t remember anyone else with their whole head wet! Did she only tell me so I could always win?
55-year-old April has just now realized-she was conning me, so I’d dunk my whole head every time!
