Sometimes on our willywalks down the graveyard road and into the woods we went foraging for sassafras root and when we got back to Gams house she made sassafras tea. I will never forget the smell of that root as long as I live. She also had a patch of mint leaves that grew behind her house and sometimes she’d send me out to pinch some mint for some tea or something she was making. I’d let that minty smell stay on my fingers for as long as I could. She seemed to know all things about flowers and trees and she loved nature and outside, and willy walking…
Another very cool event was whenever homemade ice cream was going on at Gams house or at the church hall. I think I remember Gam making some sort of flavored snow cream one year also.
You could even go to Gams if you had the croup and she’d make us some sort of molasses concoction on top the stove and have us drink it so it would coat our throats.
She knew all the tips and tricks, and as Robin one time said in reference to her tolerance levels, I guess the first 12 broke her in good.
